When power is supplied to the lock's electrical circuit, it creates an electric current which causes the magnet's poles to become strongly magnetised. This magnetism then acts as a powerful locking force that holds the two sides of the door or portal together firmly when power is applied.
The strength of the magnetic field, and therefore the holding force, is dependent on the voltage applied. The higher the voltage, the stronger the magnetic field, and the greater the holding force.

To open the door or portal, a signal has to be sent to the maglock from either a remote-control device or keypad/card reader/biometric scanner. This signal will cause the circuit to reverse polarity, breaking the magnetic field and thus releasing the doorway from its locked state. 


Types of Maglocks Available


There are two main types of maglocks: fail-safe and fail-secure. 

Fail-safe maglocks are designed to unlock when there is a power failure, allowing the door to open. On the other hand, fail-secure maglocks remain locked even when there is a power failure, providing an extra layer of security. The choice between a fail-safe or fail-secure maglock depends on the specific security needs of each application.


The Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Maglocks
